This is a very Asian thing lol. In Asian high schools grade ranks carry a lot of social meanings both within the school and with family members. In that environment it's easy to think your grades "define" you.
This is a thing in a lot of other animes too.

I’m Asian too…it really depends on the family but overall, most people are just happy to be fairly high up in the ranks. Very few people actually care to this extent about being first place. This is NOT typical at all even among the Asian community.

If you are Asian in North America, it depends if your parents are immigrants and how long they have love in the west. For Asians in East Asia, if you are from a poor background, parents generally want their kids to do well in school, but if you are from a well to do background and have the resources to get private tutoring, the expectations are going to be different.

I usually did poorly on purpose for monthly test and midterm and only did seriously on final exam. Then when I place above 30 (out of around 200 people in my year), my parents was very happy because I usually place 100+. Everyone thought I was genius back then lol, the feeling was better than you place first ...although this method stop being useful around 3rd try because everyone know you was just trolling
